This morning, the Killiney Bay dolphins were not as active as they have been recently. Their reluctance to indulge in their usual acrobatics this morning may or may not have had something to do with the arrival of two kayakers, followed about 20 minutes later by a lobster fishing boat. Or maybe it was just the temperature – a lot colder than previous mornings.
The dolphins had started doing a few jumps when the kayakers arrived, but stopped, vanished and then emerged circling the kayakers, did a few rolls around them and at one point one landed back first within inches of one of the kayakers as if dive-bombing the kayak.
I’ve heard people say they jump around kayakers in Bray but this morning, they seemed pretty shy of them and headed off within about 15-20 minutes of their arrival. Still. There were few people on Killiney beach this morning looking out and wondering how magical it would have been to be able to get up as close to the dolphins as the kayakers did.
That was me and my sister! What a great experience; especially when one of the fish blew bubbles directly underneath us, which was like an attempt to communicate! Such a shame they’ve moved off for now…maybe we’ll see them again in this life or the next
